There have also been megawumpus improvements in the text tool. Brice says he sees some room for improvement still, but overall he is "very impressed." (Source: Slashdot)

This white paper provides an overview of the process of moving an existing desktop system to the 2.6 kernel. It will highlight other software requirements imposed by the new kernel and administrative changes that you must make when migrating an existing system to the 2.6 kernel. It supplements previous whitepapers in the same series about Customizing the 2.6 kernel [Slashdot discussion here(1)] and porting drivers to the 2.6 kernel [Slashdot discussion here(2)]. You should have access to a Linux system in order to perform the example commands as we progress through the tutorial. If you don't have a dedicated Linux box, you can use a Live Linux CD-ROM-based distribution such as Knoppix."

Dell's New Linux Blog Posted Monday, February 9, 2004 @ 11:22 AM by mayhem
I've just written up an interesting find: Linux engineers at Dell have started their own Linux site and weblog about Linux at Dell. From the announcement: "Welcome to the Dell Linux Community Web. This site is dedicated to providing any information that may be useful regarding your usage of Linux on your Dell equipment. While Dell primarily works with and officially supports Red Hat Linux, many of our customers choose to run other distributions." And perhaps more importantly it appears that the new site and weblog is run and maintained by the engineers themselves. It certainly has that 'made with vi' look. (Source: Slashdot)

Why Open Source Makes Sense For Handhelds Posted Monday, February 9, 2004 @ 11:21 AM by mayhem
Are you still wondering why you should prefer an handheld running free software over one running Palm OS or Windows CE? Here's a short article to explain the main reasons you should consider. The most important are sustainability and freedom: you don't want your applications to break when you update your handheld OS or hardware, and you certainly want to decide what *you* may do with your data. Palm and Pocket PC's DRM protected and obscure formats stand in your way. That's another good reason to prefer free software: you have the source code so you can develop plug ins to read such obscure formats. Even better - you can stick to standards formats such as divx which are poorly supported on handhelds running proprietary software. (Source: Slashdot)

Poll Results: Are you running the XBox Linux Project? Posted Monday, February 2, 2004 @ 3:08 PM by mayhem
Well the time has come for a new poll, so the old "Are you running the XBox Linux Project?" poll has been retired, some interesting results (below) can be seen. I personally expected alot more people to be running it, but then again alot of people don't want to pull their xbox apart while its under warranty etc.

Are you running the XBox Linux Project?
70.1% - I don't have an XBox
15% - No
10.3% - Yes
4.5% - When its finished
Total Votes: 485

The new poll "Have you tried the new Fedora Core 1?" is now up and running, so please feel free to vote when you can.
