Interview With The FreeBSD Core Team Posted Tuesday, April 29, 2003 @ 9:56 PM by mayhem
OSNews features an ultra interesting and in-depth interview with three members of FreeBSD's Core team (Wes Peters, Greg Lehey and M. Warner Losh) and also a major FreeBSD developer (Scott Long). They discuss issues from the Java port to corporate backing, the Linux competition, the 5.x branch and how it stacks up against the other Unices, UFS2, the possible XFree86 fork, SCO and its Unix IP situation, even... re-unification of the BSDs. The Unix-Haters Handbook Online Posted Monday, April 28, 2003 @ 8:10 AM by mayhem
It looks like The UNIX-Hater's Handbook has been made availible online for free. You'll never guess who's server it is on. Worth noting that the book was written some time ago, and that much of what is in there is ancient history. But still worth a look. (Source: Slashdot)

Linux On Unmodded Xbox, Improved Posted Tuesday, April 15, 2003 @ 9:19 AM by mayhem
It looks like pSyCo from XEmulation.net Has found a way to boot Xbox Linux Live on an unmodified Xbox with nothing but an Xbox and Linux PC (no memory card of any kind, etc). Also a guide to using this method to flash your Xbox's onboard TSOP with the bios of choice, making the Xbox modded without an actual mod-chip. $5 to rent 007 to mod my xbox sounds nice =) Check it out at: XEmulation.net Forum or XboxHacker.net BBS. *Wonder what the DMCA would think about this...* (Source: Slashdot)

Lycoris Build 71 Beckons For Your Desktop Posted Monday, April 14, 2003 @ 9:37 PM by mayhem
Lycoris has released a new Beta, Build 71. Lycoris is not a Linux distro for those who already know Linux, but more for the masses, for those who want to migrate from Windows, and don't really want anything to do with the command line. Lycoris Desktop/LX equipped computers are available from Wal-Mart starting at $268.00 (build 46). It's a great OS for the masses, $30 or less, $19.99 from the company if you download your own and just want the Product ID. Registered users get REAL e-mail support and full access to IRIS, an RPM-based click-to-install program base. (Source: Slashdot)

FreeBSD Boots on x86-64 Posted Friday, April 11, 2003 @ 2:05 PM by mayhem
I was cruising the news sites and I noticed this tasty morsel over at Slashdot. FreeBSD developer Peter Wemm has successfully booted FreeBSD on a Clawhammer in both 64 and 32-bit modes.

FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT #277: Tue Apr 8 22:57:25 PDT 2003
peter@daintree.yahoo.com:/home/peter/fbp4/hammer/sys/x86_64/compile/GENERIC
Preloaded elf64 kernel "/boot/kernel64" at 0x404fc000.

While FreeBSD's SMP support still isn't there yet as we originally expected from 5.0-RELEASE, this is still interesting news as the world prepares for Opteron's (and Athlon64 for that matter) splash into the market. You can read his original post to the -current mailing list over here. (Source: 2CPU.com)

Firewalls to become illegal if bill is passed Posted Thursday, April 10, 2003 @ 10:52 AM by mayhem
AN INTERESTING PIECE of news has surfaced that will have sys admins fainting in disbelief. Eight states have put forward bills that would have a devastating effect on network security and even networks themselves if they come to pass. The wording in the bills is dumb enough that firewalls could become illegal.

The news about the bills was brought to our attention by Edward Felten, more famous for having a go at a different Bill. The states in question are Texas, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alaska, Tennessee and Colorado. The proposed legislation is intended.

Red Hat Linux 9 has been released to the official mirrors, brace for impact! Additionally, OSNews features an interview with Red Hat Linux's manager, Matt Wilson and they discuss everything from mp3/dvd playback, to Randr, dependancy policies and more." Also on the Red Hat front, DdJ writes "So, I noticed that Red Hat's stock price jumped up a bit this morning, and checked the news to find out why. It turns out they've released a new portal product and a new CMS product. Both appear to be based on Java/Tomcat, which would mean it's not Zope-based or Zend-based. But, they're supposedly open source. Anyone have any further info on this stuff yet? (Source: Slashdot)
